Blindness

An Unfortunate Mishap

eyes

It's blindness that scares us the most as a handicap.

The victim just gets almost absolutely cut off from the mainstream world around.

In fact, it is a long drawn process in general; and not an overnight mishap.

Anyone of us may fall a victim to it!

But afterall, what initiates the process?

eyes

It's not only the loss of vision, but the lack of vision too ( in other words, low vision ); a lack or loss that can't be corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Legally, if the vision is worse than 20/200 or if the field of vision is less than 20 degrees in an eye; it's considered to be blind.

What are the causes?

There is a whole long list of the causes that may initiate the process.

The leading causes are:

  • Glaucoma

  • Macular Degeneration

  • Diabetes (Diabetic Retinopathy)

  • Vitamin A Deficiency

  • Accidents

  • Cataract (if not operated)

  • Onchocerciasis

  • Lazy Eye (Amblyopia)

  • Trachoma

  • Eye Surgery Complications

  • Optic Neuritis

  • Retinitis Pigmentosa

  • Retinoblastoma

  • Blocked Blood Vessels

  • Retrolental Fibroplasia

  • Lead Poisoning

  • Tay-Sachs Disease

  • A Stroke

If the process has just started, or hasn't proceeded quite far damaging the structure permanently somehow; vision therapy may come handy in order to stop the same where it is, or in quite a few cases even reverse the process!

If it's not possible to treat it, we should, at least, manage it well. Both, socially as well as physically.

In case of an emergency of a sudden, total or partial vision loss, immediate medical help must be sought or it may flare up into something real serious.
