Eye Diseases

Acute Eye Disorders

eyes

Disease is always an unwelcome guest, more so when it comes to eye diseases and disorders. Eyes are such delicate darlings! Aren't they?

If God allows me to live with only one out of money, love, fame, power, intelligence and health, I'll choose health.

What'll you do?

And again if God this time allows me to live only with one out of all my five senses healthy, I'll choose eyes. .....What else??

What'll you do, buddy?

OK, back to business.

Diseases of the eye!

eyes

Eye diseases are many, but let's bother about the more challenging ones by dint of their seriousness and also by dint of their more common occurrence among masses.

There is this pink eye (conjunctivitis) that is an infection of conjunctiva - the outermost layer of the eye covering sclera. Pink eye symptoms are the swollen eyelids with irritation, itching and tear in them along with a watery discharge from the eye. See picture of the pink eye.

Then there is macular degeneration along with age-related macular degeneration which degenerates macula and causes the central vision getting lost.

A related category in the eye diseases concerning macula is macular edema that causes macula to swell and blur the central vision.

Many people have an eye movement disorder, both pathological and non pathological, named as nystagmus.

A malignant, cancerous tumor in the retina is quite a common eye disease and is known as retinoblastoma.

Another skin disease named shingles (herpes zoster) can turn into an eye disease when it appears on the face including eyes, and can effect vision very negatively.

One of the strange aspects of thyroid is thyroid eye disease that can make its patient very uncomfortable with the eyes bulging out and drying.

Vision loss caused by damage to the optic nerve is called glaucoma - a leading cause of blindness. There are no glaucoma symptoms as such but GDx nerve fiber analyzer can detect it quite early and hence manage it more effectively.

A benign tumor in the orbit is called hemangioma and creates visual as well as cosmetic problems for the eyes.

An injury causing swelling and discoloration around the eye is named as black eye.

Visual impairment caused by any reason - disease, malnutrition or injury - is called blindness and is the most unfortunate state of visual affairs.

A very rare malformation involving Chromosome 22 is known as cat eye syndrome.

The crystalline lens is a clear, transparent organ; but when it gets clouded, it is called cataract that starts interfering with the vision. It's a very common eye disease and surgery is the only solution.

Formation of vessels blocking the blood supply to the retina is termed as retinal vessels.

A primary cancer of the eye arising from the pigmented cells of the choroids is called choroidal melanoma.

Malignant tumors from other body parts can spread in and around the eye. When they do so in the choroid, it is called choroidal metastasis.

A flat, benign, pigmented area appearing on the choroid is known as choroidal nevus. It shows as a brownish, freckle-like spot.

A virus infection known as CMV retinisis may progress to visual loss and even blindness if left untreated.

Malignant melanoma occurring on the conjunctiva is known as conjunctival melanoma and is removed using a no-touch technique.

Diabetes causing damage to the blood vessels in the retina is termed as diabetic retinopathy. It may result in blindness.

Primary or secondary cancer in any part of the eye is termed as eye cancer.

What a horrifying list of such serious conditions of the eye diseases! Is there a preventive measure so that we don't fall prey to them in the first place?

Alternative vision research indicates that there are quite good chances to possess an invincible eye health that doesn't fall prey to the most (of course, not all!) of the said eye diseases by achieving central fixation through vision therapy.

Thank you.

Dr. Kondrot explains how microcurrent can help improve vision in chronic eye diseases including macular degeneration.
