Eye pain means a burning, throbbing, aching, or stabbing sensation in or around the eye.
A foreign body in the eye also gives a similar sensation.
It does not mean eye - strain or tiredness in the eyes.
It should never be taken lightly as it concerns the pathology of an as delicate an organ as eye is!
If the pain is associated with vision loss to any extent, it must be taken as an emergency and immediately attended to by a doctor.

Problems precipitating an eye pain are:
Eye Infection: whether viral, fungal or bacterial
Eye Irritation: like a foreign body in the eye
Eye Injury: like corneal abrasion
Eye Inflammation: of the upper and lower lids like in conjunctivitis
Migraine: severe pain behind the eye
Sinus: pain above or below the eye

Contact Lens Complications: like contact lens stuck in the eye, or contact lens causing fungal infection
Eye Surgery: pain is natural after any kind of eye surgery until the cut heals
Eye Stye: causes eye pain too, that is proportional to the size of the stye
Viral Infections: like in flu, both the eyes keep paining
Glaucoma: particularly narrow angle glaucoma is very painful
Eye Burn: any burn in or around the eye must pain as it does elsewhere in the body too.

With eye - strain as the reason of eye pain, rest works the best!
If contact lenses are the reason, avoid wearing them till the eye pain subsides.
As far as other precipitating factors are concerned, it's their treatment that relieves the associated eye pain along. You need doing nothing with the eye pain directly, in isolation by itself!
However, the best way out, to ward-off as well as keep all the kinds of eye infections causing eye pain at bay, is to open the third eye and attain the central fixation of the eye through vision therapy.

I'll reproduce the words of Dr. W.H.Bates below for your perusal:
"Inflammatory conditions of all kinds, including inflammation of the cornea, iris, conjunctiva, the various coats of the eyeball and even the optic nerve itself, have been benefited by central fixation after other methods had failed."
"Infections, as well as diseases caused by protein poisoning and the poisons of typhoid fever, influenza, syphilis and gonorrhea, have also been benefited by it."
"Even with a foreign body in the eye there is no redness and no pain so long as central fixation is retained."
