Eye Patch

Eye patch wearing is a therapeutic process for treating amblyopia or lazy eye.

It is most effective in the early childhood.

If atropine eye drops are also given in the unaffected eye once a day, along with patching the eye; the compliance goes better.

You have to jump two (high!) walls in order not to comply now, or go casual with it!

The atropine eye drops blur the vision in the unaffected eye, so the eye with amblyopia is automatically forced to be used.

This procedure strengthens the affected eye and improves its vision.

The conventional treatment of amblyopia is wearing an eye patch over one eye for months together.

Taking care of using the eye patch in the early childhood can prevent lifelong visual impairment.

But it's not easy. It has its social issues as well as it does irritate the skin too!

Hence atropine eye drops come handy here.

Patching the eye is a real cumbersome process to achieve the same effect in order to force the unaffected eye to be used.

In an amblyopia treatment study, 215 children were put on eye patch and 204, on atropine eye drops.

79 percent of the the eye patch group got treated successfully.

74 percent of the atropine group also got treated successfully.

This difference is obviously not very significant.

Hence both the approaches - patching the eye as well as administering atropine eye drops - seem to work almost equally well.

In fact, there is no error of refraction present in amblyopia. It's only that the images received by the retina are not being transmitted to the brain through the optic nerve in their full brightness.

If you don't use a thing, it will start losing its capacity to be used with the passage of time, although nothing has gone wrong with its structure!

How can we get it back? Can we?

Third eye opening does just that only. Vision therapy trains eyes to train mind through mind body connection; that is simply an on-off switch we have to clean up of its rust and just put it on!
