Eye Twitching

Eyelid Spasms

eyes

Eye twitching irritates if it extends for too long.

It is basically a spasm in the eyelid, and these eyelid spasms are involuntary in nature.

What these spasms, in their essence, are and why they afflict their victim is yet unknown to the medical science.

What is known to the medical science is certain equations that are developed between the nerves and the arteries pressing upon them resulting in a spasm.

Types of Eye Twitching: There are three types of these eyelid spasms:-

  • Eyelid Twitch: is a minor issue. Its cause is yet unknown. Generally lower lids are involved but at times both may twitch too.

  • Essential Blepharospasm: Very disturbing! Both eyelids, sometimes involving eyebrows also, close involuntarily incapacitating sight at times too. It's caused by abnormal nerve impulses producing muscle spasms.

  • Hemifacial Spasm: involves eyelid muscles along with the muscles around the mouth, but only on one side - either left or right. An artery pressing on the nerve to the facial muscles causes these spasms.

Eye Twitching Treatment:

  • Eyelid Twitch: It's not a big issue, so the treatment is not of much concern. It resolves of its own with time. Reducing caffeine may help too.

  • Essential Blepharospasm: There are four different approaches to the treatment here:-

    • Medication: Advised in mild cases only, or where other methods do not respond.

    • Biofeedback: This method also is advised in mild cases only, or where other methods do not respond.

    • Injection of Botulinum (Botulism Toxin): Most commonly recommended treatment! A very small quantity of botulism toxin is injected into the muscles around the eyes in order to relax the spasms. It works fine for a few months. Side effects include drooping of the eyelids, double vision and dry eye.

    • Surgery: removes either the nerve causing the spasm or the spastic muscle itself! This treatment is a permanent one, but the risk is there of the side-effects also being permanent, if any!

  • Hemifacial Spasm: Again there are two approaches to the treatment:-

    • Injection of Botulinum (Botulism Toxin): relieves hemifacial spasm as well!

    • Surgery: A neurosurgical procedure is employed relieving the pressure of the artery on the nerve. While the success rate is quite high, but at times very serious complications may take place!

But one must question why this eye twitching is there after-all! Why after-all do the involuntary muscles of the eyelids start producing spasms?

The motor control system pertaining to the eye is affected.

Why?

Nobody knows!

Something is there very seriously wrong somewhere in the dynamic posture of the body.

Whatever this wrong is, is obstructing the normal (!) working of the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous systems; and hence everything goes haywire, eye twitching being but one single manifestation of it.

This wrong is to be turned right, and everything falls in place....all the pieces of jig-saw puzzle fit into each other right!

That's what third eye opening does to us, and vision therapy deals with all such problems as eye twitching through opening the third eye turning the dynamic posture of the body right.
