Eyeglass Lenses

Quality versus Budget

eyes

The optician shoots the next question, "Which lenses, sir?"

Oh....okay, I chose my eyeglass frame. A pretty good one!

The optician shoots the next question.....

Oh.......ummmm........(in fact, I don't know!)

So, let me know that. Beforehand!

eyes

What are the types?

Why this type and not that?

What are the factors that affect my selection?

1. Ultraviolet protection:

  • Absorptive Eyeglasses - protect against ultraviolet rays, which could coagulate proteins in the natural lens of the eye, causing cataract, or damage the retina itself.

  • Plastic Eyeglasses - polycarbonate ones are light in weight and provide best UV protection.

  • Tinted Eyeglasses - tints absorb ultraviolet rays. Gray tints do it the best as well as don't alter color perception. Light tints reduce the appearance of lines around eyes. Yellow and brown are claimed to have a better contrast vision although others dispute it.

2. Eyeglass Coatings:

  • Anti-Reflective Coating - anti-reflective eyeglasses reduce glare from reflective surfaces like computers, mirrors, water etc. Anti-reflective coatings also reduce reflections showing up within lenses.

  • Color Coating - provides a more uniformly distributed color tint than tinted eyeglasses.

  • Mirror Coating - reduces extreme glare of water and snow as well as looks stylish to some (?).

3. Miscellaneous Options:

  • High Index Eyeglasses - are significantly thinner than regular eyeglasses and are the best option when the prescription diopter number is quite high.

  • Polarizing Eyeglasses - are highly effective at reducing glare from reflective surfaces; so if you want or need extra glare protection, you may go for them.

  • Photochromic Eyeglasses - change their shade with light. If the light is more, they turn dark but if less, they turn neutral.

The more factors you opt for, the heavier it comes on your wallet, so opt only for those ones that are either absolutely or reasonably important for you.

Yeah, but you can certainly go for a better alternative too; and that is, you can altogether do away with the need of wearing a pair of eye glasses at all through vision therapy, in case you decide so!
