Posting to third eye bloglet - My Story Page 30 - Newton and His Laws of Motion : 10th February, 2007.
The date-wise archives of third eye bloglet - My Story: My Date with My Body - about eyes, mind, sex, science, and society turned into web pages. My Story Page 30 makes a real interesting reading:
Newton says:
An object moving in space with a uniform speed in a straight line, or in its state of rest, i.e., not moving at all; will continue in its state of rest or of uniform motion unless acted upon by a force.
What does he mean to say when he says that the object is moving with a uniform speed in a straight line, or when he says that the object is at rest?
There must be some other object to be used as a reference for this statement to be true.
The moment another object is brought into the picture, gravity comes along!
The favorite 'force' of Newton!
And the moment the force is there, it starts acting on the object in question too!
In fact, the object was moving in the very first place only because the second object was there.
And moving as it was, it was continuously being acted upon by the 'force' of gravity that the other object was subjecting it to!
So, the state of rest is out of question for the object in question in any case, since it is essentially being acted upon by a 'force', just by dint of its being there!
Also, the uniform motion in a straight line is out of question, simply because it is being acted upon by a force!
So, the first postulate of Newton regarding motion does not mean anything.
In fact there is no 'straight line' in space at all!
How shall we define a straight line?
It is 'the shortest distance' between two points.
That is conceived by the least time taken in traversing the gap between the two, provided the traversing is done at a uniform speed.
For measuring this 'shortest distance' we will have to move along a path from the first point to the other with a uniform speed.
But, in the presence of a 'force', we simply cannot move with a uniform speed at all!
In fact, 'uniform speed' and 'straight line' are the two different names for the same concept.
There is no uniform motion in space possible!
Space is not a passive array of coordinates, rather it is a dynamic array of 'forces' created by the very existence of objects as being 'separate' from one another!
If space is, motion must follow.
And every motion changes the array of forces that make the space.
If forces are, they will never be balanced - opposite balancing forces can work only locally resulting in a static configuration. Otherwise, universally, what results is dynamics.
So, if space is, it must keep changing.
The concept of time takes its birth - time is the rate of change of space.
A particular time is a particular configuration of space - if the same configuration could be repeated, time could be called back too!
Hence, space cannot exist without time.
Space is a relative phenomenon too, just as time is!
Same way as motion is relative too!
The shortest distance between two points also keeps changing depending on the real physical coordinates of space at that particular 'moment of time'!
There is no straight line in the universe!
So, uniform motion in a straight line is not possible.
In fact, Euclidean Space is not possible even as an idealization!
Hence, Newton's first postulate is a theoretically (not only practically!) impossible imagination.
Newton's first law of motion DOES NOT hold good.
Next week, we shall investigate into non-uniform motion and what Newton had to say regarding that.
