Optometry will come to my rescue and examine my eyes.
It will diagnose any problem in the eye structure.
Optometry will also treat the problem if it doesn't entail any major surgical procedure.
It will measure the function of the eyes, i.e., vision too.
It will also correct any anomalies in the function, i.e., vision with the help of lenses and other optical aids.

Earlier optometry mainly dealt only with the prescription of corrective lenses for defects of vision due to refractive error.
In modern times it has extended its scope by including in itself the fitting of contact lenses as well as of telescopic eyeglasses as an aid to the near-blind.

orthoptics, another new extension, is the practice of strengthening the eye muscles and improving their coordination by eye exercises.
An optician grinds and fits the lenses by reading the prescriptions given by the optometrist.
Until 1904 people used to buy eyeglasses from traveling vendors.
Today it is a specialty profession requiring a four-year postgraduate professional degree!
