Red Eye : Bloodshot Eyes

Scleral or Conjunctival infection

Red eye is different from pink eye, i.e., conjunctivitis.

Pink eye is but one kind of red eye only.

When blood vessels in the eye are enlarged and dilated, they give an appearance of the color red on the white (sclera) of the eye. At times they generate eye pain and blurred vision too!

Now, why do they get enlarged and dilated?

The reasons may be one or more among extremely dry air, sun exposure, dust, foreign body in the eye, allergic reaction, infection, trauma, or some other reason yet unknown.

One of the widespread causes is straining or coughing with force leading to subconjunctival hemorrhage in which a very bright and dense red appears on the sclera; but it's not very serious, it only looks so!.

There can be different kinds of red eye on the frontal part of the eyeball causing not only redness but also itching, discharge, pain, and/or vision problems:

  • Blepharitis: is an inflammation of the eyelash follicles along the eyelid which is caused by a skin bacteria. Eyelids itch and discharge tends to go sticky in the form of a crust.

  • Conjunctivitis: the membrane lining the eyelids and the conjunctiva gets infected and inflamed. Generally known as pink eye, it is caused by a virus, bacteria, allergy, or irritation. In the first two cases it is highly contagious.

  • Corneal ulcers: caused by a bacterial or viral infection in the cornea.

  • Uveitis: is caused by uvea (iris, ciliary body, and choroid) getting inflamed through infection or toxins. If only iris is affected, it is called iritis.

  • Acute glaucoma: Glaucoma is rarely acute; but when it is, it becomes an emergency. It suddenly increases the eye pressure resulting in acute pain and blurring of the vision, and requires immediate attention!

  • Cold or allergies: may also cause a red eye.

  • Foreign objects in the eye: may severe a blood vessel to show give the appearance of a red eye.

  • Corneal scratches: through use of contact lenses may also result in a red eye.

  • Excess Use of Blood Thinning Drugs: also causes bleeding problems and hence, a red eye!

The treatment plan may require irrigation with normal saline solution, or some eye drops may be prescribed. In case a foreign body in the eye is the culprit, it is this that needs being removed first of all.

In case of fatigue or eyestrain, only rest is required and the red eye gets treated of its own!

If the red eye is due to conjunctivitis, hygiene and warm compresses help in relieving the problem.

In case of blepharitis, warm compresses and proper cleaning of the eyelid along the lashes comforts the red eye of its trouble.

However, the best way out, to ward-off as well as keep all the kinds of eye infections at bay, is to open the third eye and attain the central fixation of the eye through vision therapy.

I'll reproduce the words of Dr. W.H.Bates below for your perusal:

"Inflammatory conditions of all kinds, including inflammation of the cornea, iris, conjunctiva, the various coats of the eyeball and even the optic nerve itself, have been benefited by central fixation after other methods had failed."

"Infections, as well as diseases caused by protein poisoning and the poisons of typhoid fever, influenza, syphilis and gonorrhea, have also been benefited by it."

"Even with a foreign body in the eye there is no redness and no pain so long as central fixation is retained."
