Vision Problems

Eye Disorders of Refractive Error

eyes

As far as vision problems are concerned, unfortunately almost every single person on earth has one or the other kind of them - certainly after the age of 40, if not before that.

Sometimes it is nearsightedness that is very common throughout the world, at others it is farsightedness that afflicts the vision at a young age too.

Old age sight is rather a rule than exception.

So much so that the moment one turns 40, one starts waiting as to when s/he is going to start having trouble in reading near without a pair of spectacles on her/his eyes!

Then there are eye strains accompanying all sorts of headache, double vision, low vision and many, many more of the vision problems!

Do you have one?

Myopia, or nearsightedness - the commonest of all the vision problems before the age of 40 - shows you the world all blurred when you look around to recognize someone at a distance. Yeah, you have the consolation of being at a relative ease while reading a book. This problem of vision is caused by the eye focusing the image of a distant object not exactly at retina but short of it.

If you haven't paid your tax to myopia, presbyopia isn't going to spare you once you enter your 40s. You'll start facing problem in reading near first. With the further passage of age into your 50s, even the distant vision will start having problems. You'll be requiring bifocals now. A typical case of presbyopia!

Hyperopia (hypermetropia), or farsightedness, is a common vision problem too, affecting about a fourth of the population on earth. People with hyperopia can see distant objects well, but have real difficulty seeing near objects and strain their eyes.

Quoting Dr.W.H.Bates:

‘The eye that strains to see near becomes flatter than it was before, in one or all meridians. Even if it was elongated to start with, it may pass from this condition through emmetropia, in which it is spherical, to hyperopia (hypermetropia), in which it is flattened; and if these changes take place unsymmetrically, astigmatism will be produced in connection with the other conditions.’

‘On the other hand, the eye that strains to see at the distance, becomes longer than it was before in one or all meridians, and may pass from the flattened condition of hyperopia (hypermetropia), through emmetropia, to the elongated condition of myopia. If these changes take place unsymmetrically, astigmatism will again be produced in connection with the other conditions.’

Amblyopia, commonly known as lazy eye, is a vision problem signifying reduced vision not correctable by glasses or contact lenses. The brain, for some unknown reason, suppresses the image seen by the amblyopic eye. Though it affects only one eye but reduces vision in both. This vision problem is quite common in children.

Partial loss of vision is known as low vision. A person with low vision has a reduced visual acuity or an obstructed field of vision - or both.

Habitual conditions of life produce an eye strain while the eye sees. This strain is the basic reason that is responsible for all the errors of refraction generating vision problems. Isn't our life on earth a real stressful one that not only strains our minds but also our bodies including our eyes? If we learn to undo it somehow, what great results are we going to get!

Going for vision therapy may serve the purpose as it did mine - done to myself by myself!
