Posting to third eye bloglet - My Story Page 29 - Zero : 3rd February, 2007.
The date-wise archives of third eye bloglet - My Story: My Date with My Body - about eyes, mind, sex, science, and society turned into web pages. My Story Page 29 makes a real interesting reading:
As you know, I had made a new observation.
Let me peep a little into it again for helping you recall the same:
"As I was trying to read very fine print at a very short distance from my eyes (Bates had recommended this method for eye health!), I discovered that the eyes needed focusing on it in a totally different way."
"It was not the same as accommodating eyes for near vision."
"Rather it was the opposite!"
"It was accommodating eyes for far distance that made them read clear at a distance of less than 6 inches too!"
"To me, it was nothing less than a miracle."
"Nowhere in ophthalmology has it been mentioned even, what to say of discussing the issue!"
"The nearer the distance of my fine print I adjusted, the farther the focus or the accommodation of the eyes I had to maneuver in order to read the fine print crystal clear."
"When the distance got reduced to less than 3 inches, I had to focus or accommodate eye the way I did while looking far at the stars in the sky - crystal clear like pencil dots!"
"Practically a distance called infinity!"
"But, here, on the other end, the distance was going on reducing slowly and gradually approaching zero."
"And the eyes were behaving in exactly the same way for focusing or accommodating for both the distances."
"There was no difference for them in the two distances - infinity and zero, as far as accommodation was concerned."
"Why so?"
Then I took the following position:
"Infinity and zero are the same."
"They are just the two names given to the ends of the same physical reality that is called the SPACE."
"Even TIME will have to follow suit."
Then I proposed three postulates of the space-time reality:
"POSTULATE 1 -"
"The most distant point in space is the least distant point in space."
"POSTULATE 2 -"
"The most distant point in time is the least distant point in time."
"POSTULATE 3 -"
"The most distant event in space-time is the least distant event in space-time."
"I also propose a postulate in mathematics:"
"POSTULATE 1 -"
"Infinity = zero"
"Exactly zero!"
Then, the next week (i.e., the last week) I went into a little of the basic mathematics showing that the basic mathematical operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with infinity remain exactly the same when we replace infinity with zero:
"Now, let us replace 'infinity' with '0' in operations 1 to 9 with infinity:"
"1. ∞/anything = anything times less than ∞!"
"2. Anything/∞ = ? (Does it mean anything? - see below)"
"3. ∞/∞ = indeterminate (may be anything - everything)"
"8. |∞ - anything| = can no more remain ∞ since it is less than ∞! What then?"
"9. ∞ - ∞ = 0"
"Which, by doing so get reduced to:"
"1. 0/anything = (anything times less than 0!) = 0"
"2. Anything/0 = not defined (doesn't mean anything)"
"3. 0/0 = indeterminate (may be anything - everything)"
"4. 0 X 0 = 0 (not super 0!)"
"5. 0 X anything = 0 (not anything times 0!)"
"6. 0 + anything = not 0, but anything"
"7. 0 + 0 = 0 (not double 0!)"
"8. |0 - anything| = (can no more remain 0 since it is less than 0! What then?) = anything"
"9. 0 - 0 = 0"
"Now, remove all the bracketed quotes (used for understanding operations with infinity) from the above set, and we are left with:"
"1. 0/anything = 0"
"2. Anything/0 = not defined (doesn't mean anything)"
"3. 0/0 = indeterminate (may be anything - everything)"
"4. 0 X 0 = 0"
"5. 0 X anything = 0"
"6. 0 + anything = anything"
"7. 0 + 0 = 0"
"8. |0 - anything| = anything"
"9. 0 - 0 = 0"
"And we get the set of operations with zero back, exactly as it was!"
"It simply proves that, mathematically, zero and infinity are but the two different names given to the same concept as far as number system is concerned."
"Or, they are the two sides of the same coin."
"Or, they are the two extremities of the same spectrum, which wraps around its own self!"
"Next week, I'll be going into the physics of zero and infinity."
I repeated these main points here, just to refresh your memory.
So, the 'next week' has come and we are going to plunge into the most controversial of all the proposals offered in physics till date!
Infinity = zero
Zero means nothing.
Infinity means everything taken together as a whole.
Everything taken together as a whole makes it the entire universe.
Let us break it here and come to the concept of motion.
If a thing is moving, it only means so in relation with another thing from which its distance (we will come to the real meaning of 'distance' shortly!) is changing.
A thing can not move 'in itself - of itself' if there is no other thing being used as a reference.
Let us imagine that there is only one single thing, and no other thing is there at all!
Will the thing be able to move?
It does not make any sense whether it is moving or not!
Motion is not an absolute phenomenon.
It can not be conceived of at all in the absence of at least two things being there to talk about - or, in other words, two things being there in existence.
So, if there is only a single thing out there, it simply can not and will not move.
But if it does not and can not move, the space has come to an end for it!
Even time will come to an end, since time is defined as the rate of change of space (No? Think!).
A space, in which there is no motion, is no space.
If motion ends, space ends too.
Time collapses as well!
So, it is motion that keeps the space alive as well as makes the time, a meaningful entity.
Hence, a single thing can not create a space.
A single thing can not create time too.
It immediately gets turned to zero!
I think we must stop here in order to ingest this much, since it is a different paradigm altogether and needs time in order to be chewed, digested and then ingested in its fullness.
So, let us go slow and wait for the next week for some mind-boggling inferences of the stand we have taken, to deal with!
